Baltimore Afro-American (1893-1988)
Note : ProQuest historical newspapers
American History; News; Race and Ethnicity |
| Description : | "Founded by former slave John Henry Murphy Sr. when he merged three church publications, The Baltimore Afro-American became one of the most widely circulated African-American newspapers on the Atlantic Coast. In addition to featuring the first black female reporter (Murphy's daughter) and female sportswriters, the paper's contributors have included writer Langston Hughes, intellectual J. Saunders Redding, artist Romare Bearden, and sports editor Sam Lacy, whose column influenced the desegregation of professional sports. Through the decades, the newspaper fought for equal employment rights, urged African-American participation in politics, and advocated state-funded higher education for blacks. In the 1930s, The Baltimore Afro-American launched "The Clean Block" campaign, which is still in existence today, to clean up inner-city neighborhoods and fight crime. It stationed correspondents in Europe and the Pacific during World War II, providing first-hand reports to readers. In the 1950s, working with the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the newspaper's efforts contributed to the outlawing of public school segregation."--Brochure |

A joint effort of the University of Michigan and Cornell University, the database is housed on two servers, one at Cornell and one at Michigan. At this writing, MOA contains 1.5 million pages from 19th century monographs and journals. According to the site, particular strengths of the Michigan collection are education, psychology, American history, sociology, religion, and science and technology, while Cornell focuses mainly on digitizing general interest periodicals. The sites are comprised of pages scanned from the original volumes using Optical Character Recognition software, and are full-text searchable and accessible through screen reader software. The collections can be searched using limiters, proximity operators, material types and time periods. It is also possible to browse by journal title and volume or article title and author. Both sites also feature excellent help guides. The Spectator project
British and Commonwealth History; British and Commonwealth Literary Studies; News |
| Description : | The Spectator Project is an interactive hypermedia environment for the study of The Tatler (1709-1711), The Spectator (1711-14), and the eighteenth-century periodical in general. The format, style, and even the content of The Tatler and the Spectator were immediately and closely imitated in hundreds of periodicals in Europe and the Americas. The Spectator Project allows users to compare imitated and imitating formats and passages of text through the means of hyperlinks. A footnote appears in the text of Marivaux's Le Spectateur francais or Eliza Haywood's The Female Spectator, and the user clicks on it to bring up the passage in the Spectator that it derives from. While there are editions of eighteenth-century periodicals on-line and in CD-ROM format, none have linked multiple periodicals together for the purpose of studying their complex interrelation |
